Topaz, being Goldie's first doe kid, is a very nice doe - both in personality and structure. She easily delivered a single doe kid on her first freshening and had a beautiful, yet small, udder. She holds her udder high up into her escutcheon, tightly attached. Unfortunately with a single kid with a definite preference for which teat she liked to use, she quickly became uneven - nearly drying up in one side - just prior to her linear appraisal!!! I won't make that mistake again. I'll start milking ASAP, even colostrum! Oh well. Despite my error, she scored very well for a first freshener with a "blemished" udder. This speaks volumes for both Goldie and Clyde (who did improve teat size!!) in their ability to pass on nice qualities to their kids.
Topaz's second freshening, again a single, gave me a chance to practice my commitment to milking ASAP and it paid off. Her udder blossomed, and she scored very good for mammary in our 2012 linear appraisal. She scored excellent for her shoulders, back, and body capacity. Her production did drop after weaning her kid, however, likely due to my lack of commitment to being regular with my milking schedule. One more lesson for me to learn and put into practice <sigh>. Regardless of my management, she still is a lovely and correct doe, and for that I'm thankful.
