Gem lost her first born at under one week of age. I believe that is the reason why her production levels haven't been as great as her herd mates. She's a very easy keeper, with great legs and feet! She tends to the heavy side, but I'll chalk that up to feed-efficiency as her second freshening production is not a disappointment.
Gem has just had her second freshening, and I am *very* pleased with her buckling, our first Cento kid, Chance. Gem's udder is socked on tight with incredible foreudder extension. Her capacity has greatly improved over her first freshening, and I'm looking forward to seeing her develop over the coming weeks. She has good-sized, plumb teats which make milking a breeze.
While Gem's 2011 DHI testing is much improved over 2010, I would still like to see more volume. She has very good components, and is qualified for her *M on butterfat and protein. Her November test will be the last required for that honor. Gem has wonderful milk stand manners. I expect with future freshenings her production will increase, but she may never have the capacity I hope to breed for. She has very strong bone and great feet and back. Gem carries wattles and is polled to boot! Although her conformation isn't all that dairy, when bred to Cento, she has produced a very nice buckling. Gem is bred for spring 2012 kids by Cento.
